The village of Zernez

The communities Lavin, Susch and Zernez / Brail merged on January 1, 2015 to form the new community Zernez. The new municipality of Zernez has around 1,600 inhabitants and, with an area of 344 km2, is one of the largest municipalities in Switzerland. With the merger, Zernez received a new emblem for the entire municipality, which contains the main elements of the three former municipal emblems. The majority language of the merged municipality of Zernez is Romansh, but German is also spoken across the board.

As the geographic center of the Engadine, Zernez sees itself as the link between the Lower Engadine / Val Müstair and the Upper Engadine. As such, it is:

Emblem of Zernez
Farsighted visionaries founded the Swiss National Park 100 years ago. The community of Zernez has come up with a special present for the anniversary. It wants to cover all of its building-related energy needs from its own production and reduce the resulting CO2 balance to zero. A pioneering act, like the establishment of the national park 100 years ago, and an equally courageous step in favor of the environment.
